Doctors of the World Training Medics

SAFE SURGERIES TRAINING

Doctors of the World Safe Surgeries training is available for free to both clinical and non-clinical NHS staff working in both primary and secondary care settings. The training aims to improve understanding of migrant entitlements to NHS care and enable them to better advocate for their patients.

Microsoft Teams Safe Surgeries training sessions

We offer training sessions on Microsoft Teams for GP practices who have signed up as a Safe Surgery or as part of GP Vocational Training Schemes. We use case studies from the Doctors of the World’s clinic and interactive exercises to explore health needs and entitlements of migrants in vulnerable circumstances and offer good practice tips and resources. The training is delivered by Doctors of the World’s staff and clinic volunteers and is currently available remotely on Microsoft Teams. Sessions typically run from one-two hours, but can be tailored to specific needs. Please email us at safesurgeries@doctorsoftheworld.org.uk for more details.

Sample topics for different key audiences are given below:

GP RECEPTION STAFF:

– Exploring barriers to GP registration faced by migrants;

– Implementing NHS England guidelines on GP registration for migrants;

– Good practice tips for ensuring access to healthcare for refugees and migrants.

CLINICAL STAFF (PRIMARY/SECONDARY CARE):

– Overview of entitlements to NHS care and charging rules for migrants;

– Addressing the healthcare needs of vulnerable migrants, including refugees and asylum seekers;

– Making referrals and supporting migrant patients with complex needs.

Sample feedback from a GP Trainer:

“Our docs came back so full of enthusiasm and admiration for all you do; best of all with a renewed determination to help…  thanks for everything!” – Dr M Sayer, GP Partner & Programme Director, City & Hackney GP Vocational Training Scheme
