As doctors, we believe people should be treated on the basis of need, regardless of who they are or where they’re from. But this doesn’t always happen in our country.

Despite everyone in the UK being legally entitled to see a doctor, rising anti-immigration rhetoric from the government and media means many migrants are too scared to get the treatment they urgently need. As a result, politicians are determining which patients you see.

Because of politics, vulnerable patients are going without medical care.

I’ve been a GP for more than 30 years, and recently I’ve volunteered for Doctors of the World – an organisation
that fights to ensure no one here or abroad is denied the care they need.

Many of the patients I see are undocumented migrants who have fled persecution in their own countries. Now in the UK, they are too frightened to go to hospital or register with a GP. Without the right paperwork, they fear they will be deported.

Recently a colleague met a pregnant woman who wished to register for antenatal care. Because of her immigration status, she was warned that her details could be passed to the Home Office. As a result, she didn’t attend her antenatal appointments.

The fear of deportation led her to risk her baby’s life by not accessing appropriate care.

If you believe denying vulnerable people medical support for political reasons is an outrage, please join our fight for a fairer world for all patients.

Please donate today.

We’re determined that no one should go without the treatment, information and practical support they need to live safe, healthy lives. But we need the help of concerned doctors like you to carry on our vital work.

Your kind gift of £100 to Doctors of the World could:

  • Cover the interpreting costs of the extended GP appointment we give many of our patients, giving our clinicians time to get to the root of the problem.
  • Help towards a month’s worth of the medicines our clinic supplies to patients to cover them until they can register with an NHS GP.
  • Contribute towards the costs of a new Foetal Doppler for our Women and Children’s Clinic.

Will you help make sure more vulnerable patients are treated like human beings, not political pawns?

No one should dictate which patients we see. Not politicians, not the media. Your gift today will help us ensure everyone receives the medical care they’re entitled to, no matter who they are, no matter where they come from.

PS: In an ideal world, there would be no need for our organisation. But as long as policies and political pressure deter vulnerable patients from seeking medical help, Doctors of the World will be there. Please help in any way you can. Thank you.
