Doctors of the World UK is an international humanitarian organisation whose volunteers provide medical care to vulnerable populations in both developing and developed countries. As part of that mandate we operate a free medical clinic in London, helping those who are unable to access services through the NHS. Doctors of the World UK is looking for an Outreach and Advocacy Officer for its advocacy and healthcare initiative Project: London.
Main tasks, duties and responsibilities
1. Advocacy activities
- Follow up the work of our support workers by effectively helping clients to access mainstream services.
- Monitor cases to ensure actual access
- Train and manage team of volunteers to provide additional support to highly vulnerable clients through the close-follow up scheme
- Identify case studies to be used to highlight the systemic problems encountered
- Identify and describe trends
- Keep up to date on changes in the legislation and contribute to lobbying documents and reports
2. Educational Activities
- Deliver educational sessions to healthcare providers about access to healthcare
- Identify key community groups, NGO's, health professionals, students and individuals interested in being empowered to advocate on behalf of service users needing access to healthcare
- Deliver educational sessions to potential service users, to inform them about how to access healthcare services.
3. Outreach activities
- Establish and maintain contact with community groups, NGOs and medical professionals in order to ensure awareness of services we provide.
4. Health Promotion
- Identify medical professionals and key partners to develop and deliver health promotion
5. Management support for Project:London
- Manage the Project:London clinic 1-2 times a week and providing cover as needed
- Support the Project: London volunteer team in their advice work and referrals to other agencies
- Contribute to the development and implementation of training sessions for Project: London volunteers.
- Conducting inductions with case support workers and ensuring training and development needs are identified and met.
6. Administration
- To share with other staff, responsibility for providing office cover, including answering the telephone and completing administration.
We are looking for a dynamic Outreach and Advocacy Officer with at least one year's (professional or voluntary) experience of working in an NGO doing advice work, preferably with vulnerable groups:
You will
- Have a university degree in Human Rights, International Development, Law, Political or Social Sciences or relevant degree and a sound knowledge of the UK health services
- Have organisational skills including experience in coordination activities
- Have experience conducting training sessions with a variety of groups, including health professionals, volunteers, community groups and clients
- Have experience in outreach work (developing a strategy, promoting work, delivering presentations)
- Experience supervising and training volunteers and in working as part of a small team
- Be highly motivated to alleviate social exclusion by providing medical assistance to vulnerable people including the homeless, sex workers and migrants including those without regular status
- Be willing to advocate in line with DOW UK's principles.
