Doctors of the World UK - British surgeon Christopher Bulstrode in DOW's Haiti emergency mission

As part of our commitment to Haiti's recovery from the earthquake, we brought a team of Haitian surgeons here to the UK, for training and observation which was tailored to their needs. Dr Getho Chertoute & Dr Oda Mukkuaka were the surgeons who led the Doctors of the World emergency team in the aftermath of last year's devastating earthquake.

Dr. Mukuakka speaks of the valuable skills he will bring back home:

"Being at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford over the past few weeks I know if I had the equipment and the knowledge then I would have saved many more people following the earthquake. I'm going to teach my fellow surgeons back home. This tragedy has changed my life but has also given me the tremendous motivation to develop my surgical skills."

Professor Chris Bulstrode is the Oxford surgeon who arranged the training. He met the Haitian surgeons when he was part of Doctors of the World's emergency mission. By their side, he spent 3 weeks working in Port au Prince, during which time he carried out 500 amputations. Knowing that he was part of something special, he vowed to do more:

"I found working with the Haitian surgeons a great inspiration. They had lost their families and despite the devastation they put all that to one side to help treat the patients that needed them most. For this reason I vowed that I would do something to help them in return. I know these Haitian surgeons are going to be leaders of medicine."
