Supporting Health Centres in Chechnya

Supporting health centres

Location: Kurchaloi, Nozhay-Iurt and Vedeno districts

Situation:

Devastated by years of conflict, the Chechen Republic is today experiencing a degree of stability, because of the drastic security measures implemented by Ramzan Kadyrov's government. This security policy allows human rights violations to take place and the reopening of health centres does not address the issue of the health inequalities between Grozny and the most isolated districts. Doctors of the World (DOW) has been working in Chechnya since 1995 and now supports 34 health centres in the most remote areas.

Activities:

The first aspect of DOW's action is the supply of medicines and medical supplies to the 34 health centres we support. The programme also includes training for healthcare professionals, provided by specialist doctors from the Caucasus, to ensure the quality of care provided. Finally, as part of DOW's withdrawal process, the team is supporting the Chechen authorities as they take over the programme activities.

Outlook:

We will continue to withdraw progressively from Chechnya in 2009 and the Ministry of Health will take over the activities supporting the relevant health facilities.
