Location: Municipality of Lobito, Benguela Province.
Situation:
With economic growth reaching nearly 20% in 2008, Angola aspires to become one of the most powerful countries in Africa. To this end, major efforts have begun-such as the organisation of the African Nations Cup in 2010. The government has made little progress, however, with implementing policies to reduce increasingly worrying social inequalities. Doctors of the World's (DoW) work in Angola relates to the health system and re-socialisation of street children.
Activities:
After four years of working with street children in Lobito, the time has come for DoW to hand-over the work. We have identified the Angolan organisation OMUNGA (which has been defending children's rights for more than 15 years) to carry on our work. Throughout 2008 we focused on building capacity within this organisation to ensure that it will be able to rise to this new challenge.
Outlook:
From June 2009, OMUNGA will carry out all the work relating to accompanying street children in Lobito. We will remain present and will work alongside OMUNGA to set up a network of local partners.
