LOCATION: Constantine in Algeria
SITUATION:
Due to structural reforms that lead to progressive privatisation, the Algerian public health sector is in crisis. As a result, access to healthcare is becoming increasingly difficult and unaffordable for the population. Follow-up treatment for chronic conditions is deteriorating. Health education and prevention are very poorly developed.
SOLUTION:
Doctors of the World is supporting Association Cirta Oxygène (ACO) to implement a primary and community health promotion programme. This involves promoting health education for patients affected by chronic diseases, by developing community-based activities and practices that do not depend on medication. It also aims to demonstrate the value of these practices to the country's health authorities and other stakeholders.
BENEFICIARIES: 30000
RESULTS:
340 individuals have participated in ACO's various activities (These include: healthy eating workshops, themed focus groups, individual interviews, training sessions on controlling blood sugar levels, awareness-raising campaigns, meetings with public sector doctors and a seminar on health education).
OUTLOOK: Long term project.
From 2011, ACO aims to develop its activities with a younger target group. In addition, the organisation is looking for funds to be able to become autonomous.
