Grade: Tough
Duration: 1 Day
The day trek starts early from Winchester, ancient capital of Wessex and city of King Alfred the Great. The path will then follow the Itchen valley, and you will climb the first hill before the city’s outskirts have dropped behind you. Then you will head west through ancient woodland and farmland and past ancient earthworks. You pass historic King’s Somborne, site of a royal hunting forest and palace, then cross the picturesque River Test towards the halfway point.
Leaving the Test Valley behind you, you will cross rolling downs with fabulous views, then take a Roman Road which cuts unswerving through the landscape. The route continues to dip and climb as you cross the hills.
On a clear day you will see Salisbury’s magnificent Cathedral spire – at 404ft it is the highest in the UK – from many miles away. Passing Clarendon Palace, a hunting lodge ruin dating back to Norman times, it’s not long before you reach Salisbury and can celebrate our achievement in front of the beautiful Cathedral.
