Who we are

As well as sending volunteers overseas to provide medical care to vulnerable people who are effected by natural disasters (recent hurricane in Burma), conflict (emergency response sent to Sudan) and extreme poverty (HIV/AIDS prevention amongst isolated populations in Zimbabwe)- our offices run healthcare projects in their capital cities for marginalised populations who cannot access mainstream healthcare services. Overall, DOW operates in nine European countries in this way. Our UK project is Project: London.

Doctors of the World UK (Medecins du Monde UK) was established in January 1998. Previously, British volunteers had participated in projects organised by Doctors of the World France (Médecins du Monde France).

Our office in the UK'now concentrates its work on four major areas:

  • Recruiting British volunteers for overseas projects run by DOW UK France
  • Running Project:London which is a healthcare initiative reaching out to vulnerable people in the UK who cannot access mainstream healthcare services
  • Raising funds for our overseas projects and for Project: London
  • Raising awareness about DoW's campaigns, as well as raising awareness of issues concerning obstacles to healthcare that our volunteers have witnessed in the field. This is done by publishing Reports containing first-hand accounts of human rights abuses that we have witnessed which then give a voice to people whose stories would not otherwise be heard.
